Inez and Niall love all things Irish. Inez is a fluent Irish speaker, as are Róisín, Clíodhna agus Manus, while Niall enjoys a ‘cúpla focal’. They met in an Daingean, in the Kerry Gaeltacht in an area known locally as ‘Tír na Fiúise’, which is the name of their family home, agus inspioráid do Fuchsia Lane Farm.
Cuireann siad céad míle fáilte roimh guests to speak to them as Gaeilge, to try any Gaeilge they have, or just to chat about the language, its richness, and how it is part of what we are. Inez runs Irish courses and workshops for groups coming to stay.
The link with our native language resonates with the memory of generations of family who have gone before, and would have spoken as Gaeilge as their first language. Our local village, Terryglass, is Tír Dhá Ghlas, which has the lovely meaning of the land of 2 streams. The local placenames and fieldnames are also a study of saibhreas in tracing stories of those who went before. Bainigí triail as!

“Remembering that as I walk these fields, I might be stepping into the footprints of previous generations of the same family, that can be traced back to the late 1700s, can sometimes create a sense of connection and ‘earthed-ness’ that can cause me to stop and pause,” says Niall. ‘The ‘reaching back’ will hopefully allow us to ‘reach forward’ so that we act in the correct way now, which in time will help sustain future generations who will walk in my footprints when I will be a memory, if even that!”
Recently Niall read an article that referenced the Iroquois Nation in North America and how they acknowledged the place that the Elders held in their community and their deep-time vision which considered, “What would be good for the next seven generations?” Niall believes that this is the challenge and opportunity for us all in this time of change and uncertainty, as we consider and act in new ways, as we remind ourselves of the wisdom that is ‘under our feet’. As we discuss this, Niall explains that this particular field, not the best in agricultural terms, has probably not been disturbed for generations. Sensing this connection and ‘rootedness’ is an opportunity to listen and learn from the treasures beneath our feet perhaps?

Niall and Inez were wonderful hosts. The farm was beautiful and very peaceful. We stayed for 10 days and got to enjoy all the beautiful aspects of the farm; walking trails, petting the horses and enjoying the peacefulness. The cottage was perfect! Very comfortable and felt like home. We enjoyed making a fire in the evenings and cooking breakfast in the mornings. We even made blackberry jam with blackberries from the farm and Inez’s recipe. We had a wonderful stay at Nialls Cottage. The house is comfortably furnished with everything you need. Right next to it are the forest, fields and a horse paddock; about 10 min away is the village with pubs, a small shop and access to the lake.
