Trees on the Land

What gets written down, gets done. About 12 months ago we set out the plan to plant more trees and hedgerows to increase space for nature, but in doing it we wanted to do it in conjunction with others and create a community in doing so.  We simply noted: Reach a group of people who wish to be part of an initiative which supports tree planting.

Some months ago we came across the initiative called Trees on the Land. This innovative charity sets out to connect landowners and sponsors who wish to see more trees planted across Ireland.  A simple but powerful vision.  We submitted an application, setting out areas of our holding where we could plant field corners, create some new hedgerows and also establish a new orchard, based on heritage varieties. Last weekend we witnessed this vision in action on our land. With the generous support of The Hardwood Floor Company and the driving force and MD that is  Johnny Landers we welcomed 30 people to Fuchsia Lane Farm who all volunteered to help make our vision a reality.   We gathered in our Haybarn Hub where Johnny outlined the importance of planting trees, then Brian Gaynor from Trees on the Land outlined the purpose of their charity and showed us how to plant a tree.  Then the work and fun began!

Within 4 hours they had created about 160 metres of mixed hedgerows with Hawthorn, Oak, Rowan and other native species.  Field corners in 3 tillage fields were planted with mixtures of trees and native shrubs, creating what will become refuges for nature, similar to the Hare’s Corner idea.  Finally a beautiful orchard comprising fruit and nut bearing trees was established.  The afternoon was rounded off with refreshments in our Haybarn Hub and a chance for some weary limbs to be rested.  Later that night everyone shared a meal in the village and few drinks were consumed!

We are speechless regarding the generosity that everyone showed us and the absolute joy that we experienced throughout the entire day.  Their work  will have a lasting impact on this place and our planet.  At a time when this world seems to be regressing in terms of leadership, we have been encouraged and inspired!

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
