Every year millions of Europeans visit historical monuments and sites throughout Europe on European Heritage Days. These are a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union in which over forty countries participate each year. The main aim of European Heritage Days are to promote awareness of our built, natural and cultural heritage and to promote Europe’s common cultural heritage. In Ireland we celebrate European Heritage Days with a full week of events throughout National Heritage Week. National Heritage Week is coordinated by The Heritage Council and its aim is to build awareness and education about our heritage thereby encouraging its conservation and preservation.
Locally in Portumna there are a number of events planned.:
On Aug 27th there is a guided bus tour of Lough Derg where Dr. Janice Fuller will take you on a journey of discovery where you will explore some of the hidden heritage sites of Lough Derg.
On Aug 28th at 7pm Portumna Castle presents: A short Italian Opera………..with a twist! Produced by Portumna Players. Introduced after some traditional music with local musicians
On Aug 30th Lorrha village puts on a Visual Display Including Old Photos and Re Enactment of O’ Sullivan Beare’s camp, starting at 12 noon
