Ardnacrusha Visitor Experience

In the early years of the fledgling Irish State, shortly after Independence, the ambitious project of creating Ireland’s first Hydro Electric Power Station was born.  This facility, when completed in the mid 1920’s provided most of the energy needs of the emerging Republic.  Located on the River Shannon, harnessing the power contained in the volume of water in Lough Derg, this project was an ambitious and visionary undertaking designed to help bring Ireland into the modern world at that time.

Today the Power Station, operated by Ireland’s Electricity Supply Board,  provides a much lower percentage of the Country’s needs, however it still stands as a powerful testament to our founding fathers.

The centre now provides for group and individual tours and bookings can be made during the summer season online via this link

Ardnacrusha Hydro Electric Station is approximately 50 mins drive from your Fuchsia Lane Farm self catering cottage in Terryglass and you can also include a visit to Limerick city or Killaloe/Ballina as part of your day.

Enjoy the Autumn season

Enjoy the Autumn season

Autumn brings wonderful colours and an easier way of life here in the country.  The hedgerows are overflowing with berries and fruit ready for the picking  and the trees and woodlands are changing to their amazing hues of brown, gold, red and all variations that even the most skilled artist would find hard to capture.

Situated in the peaceful countryside of North Tipperary, our self catering cottages allow you to enjoy some peaceful and cosy time in your cottage and yet you are so close to the wonderfully welcoming community of Terryglass.

This time of year you can enjoy the forest walks in Portumna, Kayaking with Becky and Rueben on the Lough Derg Blueway, cycling the country lanes using our bikes and then finish your evening in the cosy surrounds of The Derg Inn or Paddys Pub.

Further afield Birr Castle Gardens, Slieve Bloom Mountains, Silvermines Mountains all offer space that is expansive and with only the sounds and sights of nature for company

Arts, Crafts and Food Lough Derg Blueway

Arts, Crafts and Food Lough Derg Blueway

Lough Derg is a haven for a range of local craft producers, artisan food makers and artists.  Spending some time in this peaceful area allows you an opportunity to really engage in a journey of discovery into a rich vein of surprises in the neighbouring counties of Galway, Clare and Tipperary.

One can experience all this as part of a cycle or touring route along the lake shores and some examples that we can recommend are:

Bridge House Studios, Killaloe where you can experience Iseult O’Flynn’s printworks

Quay Arts, Killaloe and its range of craft and art works featuring a range of artists

John Hanly Woolen Mills, producers of fine wool cloth and tweed for some of the worlds top designers

Derg Farmhouse Cheese, Nenagh, award winning raw milk cheddar cheese producers

Cais na Tire Sheeps Milk Cheese, Ballinderry, lovingly produced by local farming couple Barry and Lorraine Cahalan

Cole Ceramics, Terryglass and their quirky wheel thrown pieces

A more complete guide of places to visit and other crafts, food and interesting ‘secrets’ to be found all around the lake can be downloaded here
