Autumn Breaks at Fuchsia Lane Farm

Why Autumn Is a Great Time to Stay at Fuchsia Lane Farm

Summer tends to get most of the attention, but autumn can be one of the loveliest times to stay at Fuchsia Lane Farm.

The farm becomes quieter, the woodland changes colour and the cooler days are ideal for walking, cycling and exploring the area around Terryglass and Lough Derg. There is also something very satisfying about coming back to a warm cottage after a few hours outdoors.

A slower pace

Autumn suits people who want a break without feeling they have to fill every day with activities.

You can take your time over breakfast, walk through the farm and woodland, cycle into Terryglass or spend a few quiet hours reading. Some guests head out to explore the area each day, while others are perfectly happy to stay close to the farm.

The cottages are all self-catering, so you have the freedom to eat when you like and organise the day around yourself rather than a timetable.

Walking, cycling and time outdoors

The changing colours bring a different atmosphere to the farm and surrounding countryside. The woodland paths are particularly enjoyable at this time of year, and the cooler weather makes longer walks much more comfortable.

Guests can also use our complimentary bicycles to explore the local roads or travel into Terryglass village. Terryglass Quay is nearby and is worth visiting in every season, but it is especially peaceful once the main summer crowds have gone.

Portumna Forest Park is also within easy reach and is a good option for a longer walk among mature trees and along the lakeshore.

A swim and sauna

For those who enjoy open-water swimming, Lough Derg is only a short distance away. An autumn swim may not appeal to everyone, but for regular swimmers, the lake followed by a sauna is a great combination.

Our private sauna is also enjoyable after a walk or cycle. As the days become cooler, it is a simple way to warm up and relax before returning to your cottage for the evening.

Food and a drink in Terryglass

Although the cottages have fully equipped kitchens, it is always good to have the option of eating out.

Terryglass has two well-known pubs, Paddy’s Bar and The Derg Inn, where food is available along with a warm welcome and a relaxed village atmosphere. They are both good options for dinner or a drink after a day outdoors.

Opening hours and food service can change during the quieter months, so it is worth checking in advance or booking a table.

Evenings by the stove

Autumn evenings are made for slowing down. Light the stove, cook something simple, open a bottle of wine or settle in with a book or film.

There is no pressure to go anywhere. That is often the main attraction.

For guests who want a little more space to work, read or think, the Haybarn Hub offers a quiet change of setting. It can be particularly useful for anyone combining a short break with some remote work or time away to plan and reflect.

Explore the area without the summer crowds

Fuchsia Lane Farm is a good base for exploring the wider Lough Derg area. Portumna, Birr and Nenagh are all within reach, along with forest walks, heritage sites, small towns and lakeside villages.

In autumn, the roads and attractions are generally quieter, making it easier to explore at your own pace.

A stay at Fuchsia Lane Farm at this time of year is not about having a packed itinerary. It is about fresh air, comfortable cottages, good local food and having a little more time than usual.

Allow yourself to rest

Creating spaces for our guests to find their own ‘personal space’ is central to our vision here at Fuchisa Lane Farm.   This year has seen us create more native woodlands and opening up existing ones to enable guests and clients to find quiet, reflective spaces in nature.

Just last week, as we designed a new space, Inez spotted a large rock in the brambles.  We pulled it out and were amazed at all the history one could see in the embedded fossils on its surface.  It is the perfect shape for a ‘sit-spot’ and we now invite everyone to share this experience!

As we work with nature and the ‘treasures beneath our feet’ we are also reclaiming our native language and allowing that to tell the story of the land.  ‘Lig do scíoth’ translates into ‘allow yourself to rest’  We find this interesting! It is not a command to ‘take a rest’ or to’ sit down’. Rather it is more of a gentle suggestion to ‘allow oneself’.  Resting on this particular stone seat connects one back millenia to the time when all this land was covered by the ocean. This helps bring perspective!

Pickleball Court for guest use

We’re delighted to share a new addition at Fuchsia Lane Farm: our pickleball court is now open for guests!

Set within the natural surroundings of the farm, it offers a simple, enjoyable way to spend time outdoors. Pickleball is easy to pick up and suits all ages, making it ideal for families and groups. Whether it’s a casual knock-around or a more competitive game, it’s a great way to get everyone involved.

We’ve made it easy to get started, paddles and balls are provided, so you can head straight onto the court whenever it suits. No experience needed.

The court fits naturally with how we think about time spent here. It’s about being outside, moving a little, and sharing time together. It’s also part of our wider approach to regenerative tourism ; creating spaces that encourage connection, wellbeing, and a lighter footprint on the land.

Surrounded by the farm landscape, it’s a relaxed place to play, whether that’s a quick morning game or something longer in the afternoon.

We hope it becomes a small but memorable part of your stay!

Shane McGowan Unravelling Tour

For fans of Shane MacGowan, the legendary singer-songwriter and frontman of The Pogues, there’s a new way to experience the landscapes that shaped his voice and his songs: the Unravelling Shane McGowan Tour, a cultural trail through the places in County Tipperary that inspired him.

Although Shane was born in England, his roots were firmly planted along the tranquil boreens and riverbanks of rural Ireland. Much of his childhood was spent in the area around Borrisokane and Kilbarron, villages nestled close to the broad sweep of Lough Derg and the mighty River Shannon. These landscapes stayed with him throughout his life and found expression in his lyrics and music.

The Unravelling tour was launched in 2025 at the Broad Majestic Shannon Festival in Kilbarron, with the support of Shane’s sister, Siobhán MacGowan, his widow Victoria Mary Clarke, and local tourism bodies. At its heart is a beautifully crafted brochure and route map that guides visitors through a series of poignant stops, from small hamlets where Shane ran wild as a boy to the spots immortalised in his songs.

Whether you’re cycling the route, following the downloadable guide at your own pace, or simply reflecting by the riverbank, the Unravelling Shane McGowan Tour offers a deeply personal window into the landscapes that nourished one of Ireland’s greatest musical voices.

Lonely Planet best in 2026

We are all still celebrating the inclusion of County Tipperary in  Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 list, which highlights the top 25 destinations to visit around the globe in the year ahead.  For people who know County Tipperary, it is a tremendous acknowledgement of a diverse county, with welcoming people and places with an authentic, beating heart resourced from the very earth that sustains us all.  For those of us involved in tourism and hospitality it has given us a quiet moment of pride!

County Tipperary might never be the big tourist destination compared with other parts of this island, however it is a place that will always connect the visitor with real experiences in real communities.  We have been greeting guests from all over the world for 30 years now and are always touched by people’s comments on what they experience in our county.  The wonderful food that can be served to them in quiet country pubs, the spaciousness and peace when boating on Lough Derg, the hikes and trails in the rolling hills, the unexpected literary event or film night that happens to be on in the local town,  the chance encounter with a local person who is genuinely delighted to meet a visitor, all create moments that are special and memorable.

One of the underlying themes in The Lonely Planet article was the sense of authenticity and that ‘nothing is fake’ here.  That is part of what sets County Tipperary apart and by staying true to core values of People, Place and Passion we can remain the place where, according to The Lonely Planet writer Victor O’Sullivan,  ‘the real reason to come is the mix of heritage, hospitality and wide-open countryside.’  We believe that here at Fuchsia Lane Farm we offer just that!
